When Success Feels Like Faking It

Imposter syndrome is usually described as a beginner’s struggle — something that shows up when you’re new, inexperienced, or just starting out.

But here’s the twist – some of the most seasoned, capable and successful people I meet as a coach feel it the most.

Take a client of mine, a doctor. Years of training behind him. Trusted every single day by patients. Respected by colleagues. If you looked at his CV, you’d assume he never doubted himself for a second.

And yet, behind closed doors, he admitted: “Sometimes I feel like I’m only pretending to be a doctor. Like I don’t really belong in this role.

That’s the thing about imposter syndrome. It doesn’t care about titles, qualifications or experience. It has a way of creeping in just when you’ve worked the hardest to get where you are.

Why Doubt Shows Up When You’re Growing.

Imposter syndrome isn’t a reflection of a lack of ability. In fact, it’s often the opposite. It tends to appear when we’re stretching ourselves, stepping into new territory, or being seen at a higher level than before.

Doubt isn’t a sign you don’t belong. More often, it’s a sign that you’re levelling up. But knowing that doesn’t always make it easier in the moment. So what can you do?

Three Simple Shifts That Help.

  1. Keep a reminder of your wins.

It sounds simple, but it works. Save that email from a grateful client. Write down the moments you felt proud. Create a file you can revisit when your mind tries to rewrite your story.

  1. Challenge the script.

Instead of “I’m not good enough”, try reframing it as “I’m still learning, and that’s growth.” A small shift in language can completely change how you experience the thought.

  1. Talk about it.
Imposter syndrome thrives in silence. The moment you share it with someone, a mentor, colleague or coach – the weight starts to lift.

You’re Not a Fraud.

If you’ve ever celebrated a milestone but quietly thought, “I don’t really deserve this”, you’re not broken or unworthy. You’re human. And perhaps most importantly – you’re growing.

At Kordek Coaching, I work with ambitious professionals, creatives and leaders to help them move through self-doubt and into clarity and confidence. Together, we explore not just how to silence imposter thoughts, but how to build a mindset that supports long-term growth and fulfilment.
